Thanks for using Seabird Maps and Information for Fisheries (SMIF)! This website and map tool are provided free of charge, but we do ask that you register. Registration enables you to save queries that you can consult later, and helps us understand the needs of our users and the most useful features of the database. We assure you that your privacy is important to us, and here we describe how we collect, use, and handle your information when you use our website, software and services (“Services”).

What & Why

We collect and use the following information to provide, improve, and protect our Services:

Account. We collect, and associate with your account, information such as your name, email address, phone number, and physical address.

Services. When you use our Services, we store, process and transmit your files (including things such as your fishery shapefiles, gear types, and structured data such as query criteria).

Usage. We collect information from and about the devices you use to access the Services. This includes IP addresses, the type of browser and device you use, and identifiers associated with your devices.

Cookies and other technologies. We use technologies like cookies to provide, improve, and protect our Services. For example, cookies help us remember your username for your next visit, understand how you are interacting with our Services, and improve our Services based on that information. Setting your browser to refuse cookies may limit your ability to use the Services. If we receive a “Do Not Track” (DNT:1) signal from your browser, the server will  respond by not setting any cookies just as if you had set your browser to refuse cookies.
